The drive from Beverly Hills

One straight road, one time.

The office is not in Beverly Hills. It is 2 miles south of it, on the same street, and almost every Beverly Hills patient makes the drive exactly once. The biopsy, the microscope work and the consultation all happen in that visit.

  • Start in Beverly Hills. Wilshire Boulevard at Beverly Drive, or anywhere in the 90210
  • Head south on S. Beverly Drive. 2.0 miles, straight through, no freeway
  • Arrive at 1125 S. Beverly Drive, Suite 602. Los Angeles, CA 90035, parking in the building garage
  • Plan on about an hour. Ultrasound, biopsy, slides read on site, then your consultation

What are we sampling

The three biopsies Beverly Hills patients come here for.

A fine needle aspiration uses a needle thinner than the one used to draw blood. There is no incision, no stitches, and local anesthesia only. Pick the one your doctor mentioned.

Thyroid

Thyroid nodule biopsy

Only 4 to 6 percent of thyroid nodules turn out to be cancer. Ultrasound guided sampling, graded on the Bethesda system, read on site. Thyroid biopsy

Breast

Breast lump biopsy

Most breast lumps are benign. If it is a cyst, draining it with the same needle often makes the lump disappear during the visit. Breast biopsy

Lymph nodes

Lymph node biopsy

Usually a node is simply doing its job. When it is hard, fixed, or has not gone away, cells answer the question in one appointment. Lymph node biopsy

Two routes from Beverly Hills

The difference is who reads your slides.

If your Beverly Hills physician finds a thyroid nodule, a breast lump or a swollen lymph node, the referral almost always goes to a hospital radiology department. A radiologist takes the sample, and a pathologist you never meet reads it days later.

The hospital referral

Two visits, two specialists, two waits

  • Day 0. Referral and imaging
  • Day 3. A radiologist takes the sample
  • Day 12 to 14. Pathology report reaches your doctor
  • If the sample is short. You find out two weeks later and start over

About two weeks of waiting

With Dr. Nadelman

One appointment

One visit, one specialist, one drive

  • Day 0. Ultrasound, biopsy, slides read on site, consultation
  • Same day. If the sample is short she knows immediately and takes another
  • Within 24 hours. Preliminary results to you and your doctor
  • No second trip. You talk to the person who made the diagnosis

Why a cytopathologist matters

The person holding the needle is the person reading the cells.

In almost every other setting those are two different people, and the handoff between them is where the two weeks go. Dr. Nadelman is one of very few physicians in the United States who is board certified in cytopathology and practices as a fine needle aspiration specialist. She performs the biopsy and she interprets it. There is no handoff.

Beverly Hills questions

Asked by patients from the 90210.

About 2 miles from the center of Beverly Hills, usually 8 to 15 minutes straight down Beverly Drive with no freeway involved. The office is at 1125 S. Beverly Drive, Suite 602, in Los Angeles, with parking in the building garage.

Yes. She performs house call FNA biopsies anywhere in California, Los Angeles County included. She brings the ultrasound and the staining setup with her, so a homebound or immobile patient in Beverly Hills can have the sample taken at home.

No. The sample is stained and read under the microscope while you are still in the office, because Dr. Nadelman is the cytopathologist as well as the physician doing the biopsy. Preliminary findings are usually available within 24 hours and go to you and to whichever physician you name.

No. You can schedule directly with the office. If you do have a referring physician, Dr. Nadelman sends them the report and is glad to talk through the findings with them, and because she reads the slides herself that conversation happens with the person who made the diagnosis.

Waiting is the worst part. It is a 2 mile drive.
