Q: Why should I choose a board certified cytopathologist to do a fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, when there are plenty of other doctors that can do it?
A: In order to find out what a lump is, a biopsy is usually needed. Doctors send their FNA biopsy samples out to a pathology lab, meaning they—and their patients—must wait for an evaluation and diagnosis. Often there is not enough material, and the patient has to get stuck with and needle again, and go back for a repeat biopsy. I am a board certified cytopathologist. I specialize in ultrasound-guided FNA techniques and diagnostic procedures. I analyze tissue on premises, in my lab. I have the training and expertise to perform immediate on-site evaluation of the biopsy before the patient leaves my office. Unlike other doctors, I can decide right then and there if I need more material for additional studies (e.g. molecular tests) so that a repeat biopsy can be avoided. In addition, I can sometimes give preliminary results to the patient, as well as send the result to the patient’s referring physician within 24 hours of the biopsy. With me, it is a one-stop-shop; instead of going from one doctor to another, all of the services are provided under one roof: the visit, the procedure, and the laboratory, making the experience as easy as possible. If you have a lump and are concerned it might be cancer, talk to your doctor about seeing a board certified cytopathologist for your FNA.
